Industrial waste water treatment covers the mechanisms and processes used to treat waste water that is produced as a by-product of industrial or commercial activities. After treatment, the treated industrial waste water (or effluent) may be reused or released to sanitary sewer or to surface water in the environment. Most industries produce some waste water although recent trends in the developed world have been to minimize such production or recycle such wastewater within the production process. However, many industries remain dependent on processes that produce waste waters.
Many industries have a need to treat water to obtain very high-quality water for demanding purposes such as environmental discharge compliance. Water treatment produces organic and mineral sludge from filtration and sedimentation. Ion exchange using natural or synthetic resins removes calcium, magnesium and carbonate ions from water, typically replacing them with sodium, chloride, hydroxyl and/or other ions. Regeneration of ion exchange columns with strong acids and alkalis produces a wastewater rich in hardness ions which are readily precipitated out, especially when in ad mixture with other wastewater constituents.
Water is increasingly becoming a scarce resource in various parts of the world. In this current scenario filtration, treatment and reuse of water is becoming a common phenomenon. Almost every industry today that require water in their process activities or for other purposes are going towards reuse of water though treatment and further to the Zero Discharge mechanism.
Mostly SBR, MBR and MBBR processes are used for water treatment, with SBR being the cheapest are used most. These processes are modified accordingly to the specific needs of the client, the inlet quality of water, and the outlet quality that needs to be achieved.
